Otis stood in the waiting room, lost in thought. He didn’t usually mind having what people call a “check up”. This time he was waiting for the nano-technician to see him. Otis knew that he was about to have dozens of tiny little machines placed in his body. The idea unsettled him.

A good friend of mine emailed me a comic. In the comic, a man was sitting behind a desk, holding a piece of paper. He glares at it, then says something like, “We paid you a fortune in advance for your autobiography, and all you wrote was a single sentence!”

On the other side of the desk is another chair. There is a goldfish bowl sitting in it, and a goldfish inside the bowl. The goldfish responds something like “I live in a bowl and I have a 3 second memory span.”

What you are about to read is the very first piece of fiction that I have ever written. I belong to The Plungerhat Writers Group on Facebook. Someone created a writing prompt that called for a science-fiction story. I decided it was a good enough reason to push out of my comfort zone with writing, and create something that wasn’t non-fiction. Here is what I came up with:
